Energy

In the context of society, energy is a synonym for energy resources and usually refers to fuels, petroleum products, and electricity. Usable energy can often be easily transformed to other forms. In this sense energy is not conserved as defined by a physicist; e.g., when it is converted into heat and lost it could be less useful to society. The development of energy resources is essential for agriculture, transportation, waste collection, information technology, and communications--all considered to be prerequisites of a developed society.
