Mathematical Modeling

There are two major thrusts of mathematical modeling within GIS environments; optimization and simulation (Fotheringham and Rogers 1994; Steyaert and Goodchild 1994). Broadly speaking, the output of optimization models is a prescription of strategy. Simulation, on the other hand, is a descriptive approach.
