The pairwise comparison method was developed by Saaty (1980) in the context of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). This method involves pairwise comparisons to create a ratio matrix. It takes as an input the pairwise comparisons and produces the relative weights as output. Specifically the weights are determined by normalizing the eigenvector associated with the maximum eigenvector of the (reciprocal) ratio matrix. The procedure consists of three major steps: generation of the pairwise comparison matrix, the criterion weights computation, and the consistency ratio estimation.
